Once a sleepy gold-mining town, Cromwell reinvented itself after being partially submerged by the creation of Lake Dunstan in the 1990s. Today, it's a vibrant hub for Central Otago's fruit-growing and wine industries, with a sunny climate that feels almost Mediterranean. The historic Old Cromwell Town, relocated brick by brick from the rising waters, now houses artisan galleries, cafes, and a microbrewery. Stroll along the lakefront, sample stone fruit at roadside stalls, and discover why this is one of New Zealand's top pinot noir regions.
Highlights & What to See
- Old Cromwell Town – Wander the restored historic precinct with cobbled streets, heritage buildings, and the Cromwell Museum telling tales of the gold rush.
- Lake Dunstan Trail – Cycle or walk this spectacular 55-km trail hugging the lake's edge, with dramatic rock bluffs and suspension bridges.
- Wineries & Cellar Doors – Sample award-winning pinot noir at Mt Difficulty, Carrick, and Felton Road (a short drive in Bannockburn).
- Fruit & Produce Stalls – In summer, stop at roadside stalls for juicy apricots, peaches, cherries, and nectarines from local orchards.
- Cromwell Heritage Precinct – Explore the stone buildings and learn about the town's transformation during the Clyde Dam project.
- Goldfields Mining Centre – Pan for gold and see historic mining machinery in action.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day sufficient to explore Cromwell's highlights. Start with a morning stroll through Old Cromwell Town and a coffee at one of its cafes. Then cycle a section of the Lake Dunstan Trail (allow 2–4 hours for a return ride from town). After lunch, visit a couple of wineries or drive the short loop to Bannockburn. If you're a keen cyclist or want to do the full trail, add an extra day. Cromwell also works well as a convenient overnight stop between Queenstown (40 minutes) and Wanaka (30 minutes).
