Gibbston Valley, often called the 'Valley of the Vines,' is Central Otago's original wine region, where pinot noir found its New Zealand soul. Just a 20-minute drive from Queenstown, this narrow, sun-drenched valley is dotted with cellar doors that spill onto river terraces and rocky slopes. Here, the air smells of wild thyme and ripening grapes, and the Kawarau River glints between gnarled vines. It's a place to taste, wander, and linger — not rush.
Highlights & What to See
- Gibbston Valley Winery & Cave: New Zealand's largest wine cave, where barrel-aged pinot noir rests in a cool, subterranean chamber. The cellar-door tasting includes a guided cave tour.
- Peregrine Wines: A stunning architectural cellar door with a curved, earth-sheltered roof. Their pinot noir and aromatic whites are top-notch, and the terrace views are unforgettable.
- Chard Farm: Perched above the Kawarau River, this boutique winery offers a dramatic drive and even more dramatic wines. Try the pinot noir and the riesling.
- Mt Difficulty Wines (Bannockburn): While technically in Bannockburn, this iconic winery is a short drive south and worth the detour for its powerful pinot noirs and panoramic views of the Cromwell Basin.
- Wine Tours by Bike: Cycle the Gibbston River Trail, a gentle, scenic route linking several cellar doors. Electric bikes make it easy, and you can stop for cheese at the Gibbston Valley Cheese shop.
- Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge: Just east of the valley, stop to watch bungy jumpers at the historic AJ Hackett site — the world's first commercial bungy jump.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to Gibbston Valley — three to four hours if you're tasting at three to four wineries, or a full day if you plan to cycle the trail and linger over lunch. The valley is compact, so you won't waste time driving between stops. Combine with a morning in Arrowtown or an afternoon in Queenstown for a perfect day out. If you're a serious wine lover, consider an overnight stay at one of the vineyard lodges to fully soak up the relaxed pace.
