Moeraki Village is a sleepy fishing settlement on the Otago coast, famous for its otherworldly boulders and a thriving food scene that punches well above its weight. The Moeraki Boulders are the headline act—mysterious spherical stones scattered along Koekohe Beach, formed millions of years ago and looking like giant dinosaur eggs. But stay for the seafood: the local café and fish-and-chip joint serve some of the freshest blue cod, crayfish, and whitebait fritters you'll find anywhere.
Highlights & What to See
- Moeraki Boulders – Photograph these eerie, perfectly spherical rocks at sunrise or sunset when the light is soft and the crowds are thin.
- Fleur’s Place – A legendary seafood restaurant set in a converted wharf shed; book ahead for the catch of the day.
- Moeraki Lighthouse & Katiki Point – Walk to the lighthouse for dramatic coastal views and a chance to spot yellow-eyed penguins and fur seals from the viewing platform.
- Koekohe Beach – Stroll the beach at low tide to see the boulders in their full glory; keep an eye out for fossilised whale bones.
- Moeraki Village Pub – A classic Kiwi country pub with a log fire, cold beer, and a pool table—perfect for a relaxed evening.
Suggested Time to Spend
Moeraki Village is a quick stopover—most visitors spend 1–2 hours photographing the boulders and grabbing a bite. However, if you want to dine at Fleur’s, walk to the lighthouse, and soak up the village atmosphere, plan for a half-day. It works best as a lunch stop or an overnight detour on the drive between Dunedin and Oamaru.
