Rolling through the heart of Central Otago's wine country, the Gibbston Valley Cycle Trail is a scenic 12 km ride that follows the Kawarau River from the historic gold-mining settlement of Cromwell to the Gibbston Valley wineries. This easy, mostly flat trail offers stunning views of rocky gorges, vineyards, and the turquoise river, with plenty of stops for wine tasting, cheese sampling, and soaking up the region's gold-rush history. It's a perfect half-day outing for cyclists of all levels, and a quintessential Central Otago experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Kawarau Gorge & River – The trail hugs the river, with dramatic rock formations and the occasional glimpse of bungy jumpers from the nearby Kawarau Bridge (the world's first commercial bungy site).
- Gibbston Valley Wineries – Stop at cellar doors like Peregrine, Chard Farm, or Gibbston Valley Winery for Pinot Noir tastings and vineyard views.
- Gold-mining relics – Look out for old sluicing channels, water races, and the remains of gold dredges along the trail.
- The Canyon – A short detour to a viewing platform overlooks the narrow, steep-sided Kawarau Gorge.
- Historic Cromwell – Start or end your ride in the old town, with its preserved stone buildings, artisan bakeries, and the Cromwell Heritage Precinct.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2–3 hours for the ride itself, plus extra time for wine tastings and photo stops. Most cyclists take a leisurely half-day, starting mid-morning to enjoy a lunch break at one of the wineries. The trail is doable in 1.5 hours if you're pedaling steadily, but the real joy is in the slow pace and frequent stops.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
