Central Otago’s Fruit Growing Region, centred on Cromwell, is a sun-baked mosaic of orchards, vineyards and roadside stalls that burst into life from spring to autumn. This is New Zealand’s stone-fruit heartland, where apricots, cherries, peaches and nectarines thrive in the hot, dry climate, and the air fills with the scent of blossom or ripe fruit depending on the season. A self-drive through this pocket of the South Island is a sensory treat, offering tastings, pick-your-own experiences, and a glimpse into the region’s agricultural soul.
Highlights & What to See
- Cherry orchards – From December to January, pick your own sun-warmed cherries at orchards like Cheeki Cherries or Sarita Orchard; many also sell fresh fruit and preserves year-round.
- Roadside fruit stalls – Pull over at the many honesty-box stalls along State Highway 8 and Bannockburn Road for bags of apricots, nectarines, and dried fruit.
- Wine tasting – The region’s pinot noir, riesling and aromatic whites are celebrated; stop at cellar doors such as Mt Difficulty or Carrick for a tasting with lake and mountain views.
- Cromwell Heritage Precinct – A restored gold-rush-era town with cafes, galleries, and a farmers’ market (Saturday mornings) where local growers sell seasonal produce.
- Lake Dunstan cycle trail – Pedal along the lake shore past orchards and vineyards, with plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or a swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote at least half a day to exploring the orchards and cellar doors, or a full day if you want to cycle the trail or visit the heritage precinct. The region is compact enough to enjoy as a leisurely stop on a drive between Queenstown and Wanaka, but you could easily spend two days if you add a wine tour or a pick-your-own session during harvest.
