Wanaka, a serene lakeside town framed by the towering peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, is a gateway to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine scenery. This is a place where the pace slows down to match the gentle lapping of Lake Wanaka’s waters, yet the mountains beckon adventurers with world-class hiking, skiing, and climbing. Whether you’re sipping a flat white on the lakefront or summiting a glacier-carved peak, Wanaka offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exhilaration.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least two full days to do justice to Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park. Use day one to explore the town, walk the lakefront, and visit Puzzling World or the lavender farm. Dedicate day two to a half-day or full-day hike in the national park (like Rob Roy Glacier or the Isthmus Peak Track). If you’re a keen tramper, consider three days to tackle the Routeburn Track (which ends near Glenorchy) or a multi-day adventure in the park’s backcountry. Wanaka is also a great base for a rest day between more strenuous activities – just relax by the lake and enjoy the views.
