Moeraki is a tiny fishing village on the Otago coast that packs a powerful punch of natural wonder and local character. The main draw is the world-famous Moeraki Boulders—mysterious, perfectly spherical stones scattered along Koekohe Beach like giant marbles left by a sleepy god. But beyond the photo op, this is a place where you can watch seabirds wheel over ancient volcanic headlands, tuck into freshly caught seafood, and feel the rhythm of a working harbour. The boulders are best at sunrise or sunset, when the light softens and the crowds thin; arrive early and you might have the beach almost to yourself.
Highlights & What to See
- Moeraki Boulders – The star attraction: huge, spherical concretions scattered on the sand. Walk south along the beach from the main access point for fewer people and more boulders.
- Moeraki Village & Harbour – A working fishing port where you can watch boats unload catch and see little blue penguins and seals around the breakwater (especially at dusk).
- Katiki Point Lighthouse – A short walk from the village leads to a headland teeming with wildlife: fur seals, sea lions, and yellow-eyed penguins. Bring binoculars.
- Flee Pot Gallery & Cafe – Quirky local art and excellent coffee in a restored historic cottage; a perfect pit stop.
- Moeraki Boulders Walkway – A coastal track connecting the boulders to the village, offering sweeping views and a chance to spot seabirds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Moeraki works beautifully as a half-day detour from the main highway. Give yourself 2–3 hours to see the boulders, walk the headland, and grab a bite. If you want to linger for wildlife-watching at dusk, consider an overnight stay in a local holiday home—the village is small, so book accommodation ahead. Most visitors combine it with a stop between Dunedin and Oamaru.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Oamaru – 35 minutes north: a handsome Victorian town with steampunk vibes, a world-class penguin colony, and excellent limestone architecture.
- Dunedin – 75 minutes south: New Zealand’s wildlife capital, home to the Otago Peninsula’s albatross colony and the city’s grand railway station.
- Waitaki Valley – Inland from Oamaru: a scenic route through limestone outcrops, vineyards, and the quirky town of Ōmarama.
- Katiki Point – Right next door: the wildlife-rich headland is essentially part of the Moeraki experience.
- Shag Point – 10 minutes south: another seal and penguin hotspot with a dramatic coastal walk.
