Maniototo Plain

Stretching across the heart of Central Otago, the Maniototo Plain is a vast, high-country basin of tussock grasslands, schist outcrops, and big skies. This is New Zealand’s Wild West — a land of gold-rush history, merino sheep stations, and stark, haunting beauty. The region’s name, from Māori Mania-o-toto (plain of blood), hints at its dramatic past. Today, visitors come for the silence, the light, and the sense of being utterly remote, yet only an hour from Queenstown.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least two days to properly explore the Maniototo Plain. This allows time for a leisurely drive from one historic settlement to the next, a half-day cycle on the Rail Trail, and an evening of stargazing. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Queenstown or Wanaka can cover St Bathans and Naseby, but you’ll miss the serene, slow-paced atmosphere that defines the plain.
