Carved by the wild Kawarau River through schist rock, the Kawarau Gorge is a dramatic, narrow canyon on the road between Queenstown and Cromwell. Its steep, golden-hued cliffs and swift turquoise waters have drawn gold miners, bungy jumpers, and wine lovers. The gorge is both a historic transport route and a playground for adventure seekers, with the world's first bungy site at the Kawarau Bridge and several walkways that reveal the region's mining past.
Highlights & What to See
- Kawarau Bridge Bungy – Leap from the historic 43-metre bridge where commercial bungy began; you can just watch the thrill-seekers from the viewing platform.
- Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge – Walk across the original 1880s bridge (now pedestrian-only) for classic gorge views and a sense of history.
- Kawarau River Jet Boating – High-speed rides through the narrow canyon, with 360-degree spins and close-up rock walls.
- Goldfields Mining Centre – A hands-on historic site where you can pan for gold, explore tunnels, and see restored mining machinery.
- Gibbston Valley – Just downstream, this wine region is famous for pinot noir; combine a tasting with a gorge visit.
- Kawarau Gorge Walkway – A short, easy track along the riverbank with interpretive signs about the gold rush era.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to experience the gorge's main attractions. Allow 1–2 hours for bungy watching or jumping, plus time for a jet boat ride (around 45 minutes) and a wander across the suspension bridge. If you add a wine tasting at Gibbston or a gold-panning stop, plan for a full day. The gorge is a natural stop on the drive between Queenstown and Cromwell, so you can easily break a longer journey here.
