Pedalling through the heart of New Zealand's South Island, the Central Otago Rail Trail offers an unforgettable journey through a landscape of rugged mountains, wide river valleys, and historic gold-mining towns. This 150-kilometre cycling and walking trail follows a former railway line from Middlemarch to Clyde, winding through tunnels, over viaducts, and past the hauntingly beautiful Otago schist rock formations. The trail is a perfect blend of outdoor adventure, local history, and laid-back Kiwi hospitality.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most cyclists complete the trail in 3 to 5 days, allowing time to explore side trips and soak in the scenery. A common itinerary is to cycle from Middlemarch to Ranfurly (day 1), then to Omakau or Alexandra (day 2), and finish in Clyde (day 3). If you're short on time, a two-day trip covering the middle section from Ranfurly to Alexandra is a rewarding option. Walkers typically allow 5 to 7 days. Book accommodation and bike hire in advance during peak season (October to April).
