West Coast
New Zealand's West Coast is a wild, untamed stretch of rugged coastline, ancient rainforests, and dramatic glaciers. It's a place where the Tasman Sea crashes against black sand beaches, and the Southern Alps rise abruptly from the bush. This is a region for adventurers and nature lovers, offering some of the country's most spectacular scenery and a rich history of gold mining and Māori settlement.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – Walk up to the terminal faces of these massive rivers of ice, or take a helicopter tour for a bird's-eye view of the crevasses and icefalls.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks & Blowholes – Marvel at the layered limestone formations and watch seawater explode through blowholes at high tide.
- Hokitika Gorge – A short walk leads to a swingbridge over impossibly turquoise water, carved through sheer rock walls.
- Okarito Lagoon – Kayak or take a boat tour on this serene coastal lagoon, home to white herons and other birdlife.
- Shantytown Heritage Park – Step back in time to a recreated 1860s gold-rush town, complete with a working steam train and gold panning.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the West Coast, allow at least 3 days for a one-way drive from Greymouth to Haast. This gives you time for a glacier hike, a visit to Punakaiki, and a stop in Hokitika. If you're short on time, a 2-day whirlwind tour can hit the highlights, but you'll miss the chance to soak in the region's wild atmosphere.
