Treble Cone is a skier's mountain, pure and simple. Perched above Lake Wānaka, this South Island giant offers the longest, steepest, and most sustained terrain in New Zealand. The jaw-dropping views of the Southern Alps and the lake below are a constant companion as you carve down wide-open bowls or plunge into chutes. It's not a resort for beginners or those seeking après-ski glitz; it's a place for accomplished skiers and snowboarders who crave big-mountain adventure and uncrowded slopes.
Highlights & What to See
- Motatapu Chutes & Saddle Basin: Legendary steep terrain accessed via the summit lift, offering deep powder and challenging lines for experts only. The Saddle Basin is a vast playground of open faces and natural half-pipes.
- Home Basin: The main hub with a mix of intermediate cruisers and advanced runs, plus the base lodge for a quick coffee break. The 'Mega-Pipe' and terrain park keep freestylers entertained.
- Summit Views: From the top of the summit chair, you can see across Lake Wānaka to Mount Aspiring National Park. On a clear day, it's a photo op you won't forget.
- Wānaka Town: While not on the mountain, the charming lakeside town is your base for accommodation, dining, and gear hire. Don't miss the famous 'That Wānaka Tree' for a classic shot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to Treble Cone to truly explore its vast terrain. The drive from Wānaka takes about 35 minutes up a winding gravel road, so allow extra time. If you're a strong skier, you can cover most of the mountain in a day, but for powder hounds, two days are ideal to chase fresh lines. The season runs from late June to early October, with peak conditions in August. Avoid weekends if you can for the quietest slopes.
