On the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, Paparoa National Park is a dramatic collision of sea and limestone. The park's star attraction, the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, are a surreal geological spectacle—stacked limestone layers that look like giant stacks of pancakes, with blowholes that erupt during high tide. This is a place where ancient forests meet rugged coastline, and short walks lead to sea arches, caves, and seal colonies.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can experience the park's highlights in a half-day, but allow a full day to include a longer walk like the Pororari River Track (3–4 hours return) and explore the caves. If you're driving the West Coast, plan an overnight stop in Punakaiki or nearby Greymouth to catch the Pancake Rocks at optimal tide times.
