Just a short drive from Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula unfurls a dramatic landscape of rolling hills, wild coastline, and hidden bays that also harbors some of New Zealand's most exciting cool-climate wineries. This is Pinot Noir country with a maritime twist — the same ocean breezes that ruffle the feathers of royal albatrosses also temper the vines, producing elegant, mineral-driven wines. A day spent here is as much about the journey as the destination: winding roads, sweeping water views, and cellar doors that feel more like welcoming farmhouses than tasting rooms.
Highlights & What to See
- Chard Farm – Perched high above the Kawarau Gorge, this boutique winery offers stunning views and a superb range of Pinot Noir and Riesling. The drive down the narrow, winding road is an adventure in itself.
- Gibbston Valley – One of the region's most famous producers, with a huge cave for tastings and a deli perfect for a lunch platter. Their Pinot Noir is benchmark stuff.
- Felton Road – Often cited as New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir producer; their Block 3 and Block 5 wines are legendary. The estate is nestled in the Bannockburn sub-region, but their influence and tastings are celebrated across the peninsula.
- Mount Difficulty – Another Bannockburn star, with a striking cellar door overlooking the Cromwell Basin. Try their Pinot Noir and the aromatic whites.
- Wildlife Encounters – Combine wine tasting with a visit to the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head or a penguin-spotting tour at the Penguin Place conservation reserve. The peninsula is a biodiversity hotspot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote a full day to the Otago Peninsula wineries. Start mid-morning with a tasting at a vineyard near Dunedin, then work your way east along the peninsula, stopping for lunch with a view — many cellar doors have excellent cafes. Afternoon is perfect for a wildlife break before one last tasting at a bayside winery as the sun softens the light. If you're a serious wine enthusiast, consider an overnight stay in Dunedin to pace yourself.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Dunedin – New Zealand's wildlife capital, with a vibrant student vibe, Scottish heritage architecture, and the famous Baldwin Street. Base yourself here for easy access to the peninsula.
- Larnach Castle – New Zealand's only castle, set on the peninsula with gorgeous gardens and panoramic views. Combine with a winery visit for a grand day out.
- Nugget Point – A dramatic coastal lighthouse and seal colony about an hour south of Dunedin, perfect for a scenic detour.
- The Catlins – A rugged, forested coastal area further south, with waterfalls, petrified forest, and abundant wildlife. Best for a multi-day extension.
