Omarama, a tiny settlement in the Mackenzie Basin, is a gateway to some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes. Known to locals as a gliding hotspot thanks to its reliable thermals, this place also serves up a side of otherworldly geology and star-filled skies that will stop you in your tracks. The air here feels different—crisp, dry, and charged with the silence of the high country.
Highlights & What to See
- Clay Cliffs: A short drive from Omarama, these jagged pinnacles and hoodoos rise from the earth like a natural cathedral. The unsealed road is part of the adventure, and the formations are eerily beautiful in the late afternoon light.
- Gliding & Scenic Flights: Omarama is world-famous for gliding. Even if you don't take to the air, watching the sleek sailplanes circle on thermals against a backdrop of the Southern Alps is a mesmerizing sight.
- Ōhau Lakes: Three turquoise lakes (Ōhau, Ruataniwha, and Benmore) offer serene spots for a picnic, short walk, or photography. Lake Ruataniwha is particularly photogenic with its braided river channels.
- Stars & Dark Sky Reserve: As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, Omarama has some of the clearest night skies in the world. Pull over anywhere away from lights and look up.
Suggested Time to Spend
Omarama is a stopover rather than a destination. Plan for a half-day to explore the Clay Cliffs and lakes, or a full day if you want to add a glider flight or a short walk. Most travellers pass through on the way between Queenstown and Mount Cook, so a lunch break plus a couple of hours is enough to soak in the highlights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lake Pukaki: The stunning milky-blue lake with views of Mount Cook is a must-photograph stop on the way to or from Omarama.
- Wanaka: A 90-minute drive west, Wanaka offers a more bustling lakeside scene with hiking, wineries, and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Lindis Pass: The scenic drive over Lindis Pass between Omarama and Wanaka is a highlight in itself, with golden tussock hills and sweeping views.
