Katiki Point Lighthouse

Perched on a windswept headland on the Otago coast, Katiki Point Lighthouse is a ruggedly beautiful spot where the wild Tasman Sea crashes against rocky cliffs and seabirds wheel overhead. The lighthouse itself, a sturdy white tower built in 1878, still guides ships today, but the real draw is the dramatic coastal scenery and the chance to see New Zealand fur seals and yellow-eyed penguins in their natural habitat. It's a place that feels remote and untamed, perfect for a short, scenic stop on a drive along the Moeraki–Katiki coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 30–45 minutes to walk the clifftop loop and soak in the views. If you're keen on penguin watching, plan to arrive in the late afternoon and stay until dusk (bring warm clothes and binoculars). The lighthouse is an ideal quick detour on a self-drive itinerary along the coast between Oamaru and Dunedin.
