Iron Mountain, a rugged peak rising above the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown, offers some of the most rewarding hiking in the Otago region. Named for the rusty hue of its schist rock, this mountain rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views of the Wakatipu Basin, the Remarkables, and the turquoise waters of Lake Hayes. The trail winds through native beech forest and open tussock slopes, passing relics of the area's mining past. It's a favourite among locals for a sunrise or sunset hike, when the light paints the landscape in gold and crimson.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a half-day for the return hike from Arrowtown — typically 3–4 hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. The track is well-formed but steep in sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy a portion of the trail for a one-hour walk with rewarding views. For photographers, plan to be on the summit for sunrise or sunset; the golden hour light is spectacular.
