Just a short drive north of Ōamaru, the Elephant Rocks are a surreal landscape of massive limestone boulders that have been sculpted by wind and rain over millions of years. Scattered across rolling green farmland, these pale, rounded formations look like a herd of petrified elephants grazing in a paddock. It’s a place that feels ancient and otherworldly – you half expect a pterodactyl to glide overhead. The rocks are free to explore, and the lack of crowds means you’ll often have the entire site to yourself.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can see the Elephant Rocks in about 30–45 minutes for a quick stop, but allow 1–1.5 hours if you want to explore all the nooks, take photos, and enjoy a picnic. It’s an ideal brief detour on a road trip between Ōamaru and the Waitaki Valley – combine it with other nearby attractions for a half-day outing.
