Akaro

Akaro is a tiny historic settlement tucked into the hills above Arrowtown, offering a serene escape into Otago's gold-mining past. The drive up from Arrowtown winds through golden tussock and rocky outcrops, and the silence here is broken only by birdsong and the rustle of the wind. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the crisp high-country air, and imagine the lives of the miners who once toiled in these remote gullies.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Akaro is a quick but rewarding stop. Plan for 1–2 hours to walk the loop trail, read the information panels, and soak in the atmosphere. It's best combined with a visit to Arrowtown itself, making for a half-day outing from Queenstown. The site is accessible year-round, though the gravel access road can be muddy after rain.
