Te Anau

Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for most journeys to Milford Sound. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, this small town offers a perfect blend of dramatic scenery, outdoor adventure, and relaxed lakeside charm. The real draw here is the raw, untouched wilderness that surrounds it – think towering peaks, ancient beech forests, and fiords carved by glaciers. But Te Anau itself is a welcoming hub, with a handful of excellent cafes, a great local museum, and the famous glowworm caves just across the lake.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 nights in Te Anau, which allows for a day trip to Milford Sound (allow 10–12 hours round trip) plus time to explore the lake and a shorter walk. If you're doing the Kepler Track or a Doubtful Sound cruise, budget 3–4 nights. The pace here is relaxed – you'll want to linger over a coffee at a lakeside café and watch the light change on the mountains.
