Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for most journeys to Milford Sound. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, this small town offers a perfect blend of dramatic scenery, outdoor adventure, and relaxed lakeside charm. The real draw here is the raw, untouched wilderness that surrounds it – think towering peaks, ancient beech forests, and fiords carved by glaciers. But Te Anau itself is a welcoming hub, with a handful of excellent cafes, a great local museum, and the famous glowworm caves just across the lake.
Highlights & What to See
- Milford Sound – The crown jewel of Fiordland; take a cruise or kayak beneath sheer cliffs and waterfalls. Book ahead in peak season.
- Lake Te Anau – Walk or cycle the lakeside tracks, or hire a boat for a peaceful afternoon on the water.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves – A boat trip across the lake leads you into limestone caves illuminated by thousands of glowworms.
- Kepler Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, offering a 3–4 day hut-to-hut trek through alpine passes and pristine valleys. Day walks also possible.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre – Interactive exhibits on the region's geology, wildlife, and Māori history; also a great place for trip planning.
- Doubtful Sound – Less crowded than Milford, this deeper fiord offers a more remote experience, often with overnight cruises.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 nights in Te Anau, which allows for a day trip to Milford Sound (allow 10–12 hours round trip) plus time to explore the lake and a shorter walk. If you're doing the Kepler Track or a Doubtful Sound cruise, budget 3–4 nights. The pace here is relaxed – you'll want to linger over a coffee at a lakeside café and watch the light change on the mountains.
