Weka Pass, a striking limestone gorge on State Highway 7 between Waipara and Hanmer Springs, is one of Canterbury's hidden gems. The pass is named after the weka, a flightless native bird, and its landscape is a dramatic blend of weathered limestone outcrops, rocky bluffs, and dry riverbeds. This area is steeped in Māori history, with ancient rock art sites that offer a glimpse into early life in the region. Driving through the pass feels like entering a prehistoric world, where the golden-hued rocks and sparse vegetation create a stark, beautiful contrast with the blue skies. Stop at the Weka Pass Railway or the nearby Waipara wine region to round out your visit.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can appreciate the scenic drive through Weka Pass in as little as 30 minutes, but to truly experience it, allow 2–3 hours. This gives you time to stop at the historic reserve, walk a short trail to the rock art, and maybe ride the vintage railway. If you combine with wine tasting in Waipara or a soak in Hanmer Springs, plan for a half-day or full-day trip from Christchurch (about 1.5 hours drive).
