Te Araroa Trail
Te Araroa, New Zealand's epic 'Long Pathway', stretches over 3,000 kilometres from Cape Reinga in the north to Bluff in the south. The North Canterbury section passes through the heart of the South Island, offering walkers a diverse mix of braided river valleys, alpine passes, and high-country stations. This is tramping at its most authentic – expect to ford streams, navigate tussock-covered hills, and sleep in basic huts under star-studded skies.
Highlights & What to See
- Harper Pass: A historic route used by Māori and early European settlers, this high alpine pass rewards with sweeping views of the Southern Alps.
- Boyle River: Follow the braided Boyle River through beech forest and open flats, with chances to spot kea and falcons.
- Hanmer Springs: Not strictly on the trail but a short detour – soak your weary muscles in the thermal pools after days on the track.
- St James Walkway: This 67-kilometre loop (part of Te Araroa) crosses the Waiau River and offers hut-to-hut tramping through pristine wilderness.
- Molesworth Station: New Zealand's largest farm; the trail skirts this vast high-country station, where you can see wild horses and historic musterers' huts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers allow 5–7 days to complete the North Canterbury section (from Boyle Village to Hanmer Springs or beyond). The terrain is moderate but challenging – expect 6–8 hours of walking per day. If you're tackling the entire Te Araroa, this stretch is a highlight of the South Island leg; plan to resupply at Hanmer Springs or the small settlement of Boyle.
