Pelorus Bridge is a serene slice of native New Zealand bush, where the turquoise Pelorus River flows through lush beech forest. This is the filming location for the Anduin River scenes in The Hobbit, but even without the movie magic, it's a stunning spot for a swim, picnic, or short walk. The bridge itself offers a perfect vantage point over the clear water, and the surrounding reserve is a haven for birdlife.
Highlights & What to See
- Pelorus River – Swim, kayak, or simply gaze at the emerald water swirling around ancient boulders. The river is famously clear and refreshing.
- Totara Nature Walk – A 30-minute loop through towering rimu, beech, and tōtara trees. Keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeons) and tūī.
- Rai Valley Walkway – A longer 2-hour return track along the river, offering more secluded swimming holes and forest scenery.
- Historic Pelorus Bridge – Built in 1914, this single-lane concrete bridge is a classic piece of New Zealand engineering and a great photo spot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Pelorus Bridge is a perfect short stop. Budget 1–2 hours for a swim and a short walk. If you're a keen kayaker or want to do the longer Rai Valley Walkway, allow half a day. It works well as a lunch break between Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds.
