Amuri Range

The Amuri Range rises like a rugged spine through North Canterbury, its greywacke peaks and deep valleys cloaked in tussock and beech forest. For travellers with a taste for the untamed, this is a place where the Southern Alps meet the plains, offering raw landscapes, rich Maori and farming history, and a genuine sense of isolation. The range is a playground for hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone craving a dose of high-country atmosphere without the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give the Amuri Range at least a full day to do it justice. A morning hike up Mount Lyndon (around 3–4 hours return) followed by an afternoon exploring Lake Lyndon and the Waipara River Valley is a solid plan. If you're keen on mountain biking or a farm stay, two days allows a more relaxed pace. The range is best visited between November and April when the high trails are free of snow.
