Stretching from the shimmering waters of Tasman Bay to the alpine peaks of Kahurangi National Park, the Tasman District is a sun-soaked haven of golden beaches, sculpted limestone landscapes, and artisan food trails. This is Nelson's laid-back neighbour, where you can kayak beside seals in Abel Tasman National Park, explore marble caves in the Takaka Hill, or sample craft cider on a hop farm. With a microclimate that produces some of New Zealand's best wine and fruit, Tasman rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman National Park – New Zealand's smallest national park, famed for golden sand beaches, turquoise coves, and the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Kayak from Marahau to spot fur seals and take water taxis for day walks.
- Kahurangi National Park – Rugged wilderness with the Heaphy Track, limestone arches at Ōpārara Basin, and the remote Boulder Lake. Birders come for great spotted kiwi.
- Golden Bay – A chilled-out enclave with Farewell Spit, Te Waikoropupū Springs (the clearest in NZ), and the artsy village of Takaka.
- Nelson Lakes National Park – Beech forests, glacial lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, and the scenic Lake Rotoiti Loop Track. A base for tramping and trout fishing.
- Māpua – A historic fishing village turned foodie hub, with galleries, smoked fish at The Smokehouse, and the Moutere River walking track.
- Moutere Valley – Rolling hills of hop gardens and vineyards. Stop at a cellar door for Nelson Sauvignon Blanc or a craft brewery like McCashin's.
- Takaka Hill – Drive the winding road for panoramic views, explore Ngarua Caves with glowworms, and visit the Harwoods Hole rock formations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Tasman District at least three to five days to do it justice. Spend two days in Abel Tasman National Park (one for a kayak or walk, another for a water taxi trip), one day exploring Golden Bay and Farewell Spit, and a day visiting Māpua and the Moutere Valley wineries. If you're a keen tramper, add two more days for a Kahurangi overnight or the Heaphy Track. The district is compact but the roads are winding; base yourself in Motueka or Takaka to minimise driving.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson City – Gateway to the region, with the World of WearableArt museum, Saturday market, and craft beer bars.
- Abel Tasman Coast Track – Multi-day Great Walk; book hut or campsite spaces in advance.
- Farewell Spit – A 35km sandspit with gannet colony and seal haul-outs, accessible by guided tour.
- Pupu Springs – Te Waikoropupū Springs, sacred to Māori, with crystal-clear water and a short boardwalk.
- Wharariki Beach – Wild west coast beach with seal pups and the famous archway rock formations.
