Nelson Lakes National Park is a pristine alpine wonderland where beech forests meet glacier-carved valleys and mirror-still lakes. This is New Zealand's backyard adventure playground, offering world-class hiking, trout fishing, and stargazing without the crowds of the more famous parks. The twin lakes, Rotoiti and Rotoroa, are the gateways to a network of trails that lead into the heart of the Southern Alps. Whether you're a seasoned tramper or a casual day-tripper, the crisp mountain air and the sound of bellbirds will have you planning your next visit before you leave.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoiti – The main hub, with a stunning shoreline walk, kayaking, and the famous Whisky Falls track.
- Angelus Hut – A classic alpine hut accessed via the Robert Ridge Track, offering panoramic views of the park's highest peaks.
- Mount Robert Circuit – A challenging but rewarding day hike with sweeping views over Lake Rotoiti and the Travers River valley.
- Blue Lake (Rotomairewhenua) – One of the clearest lakes in the world, visible on the Travers-Sabine Circuit; its waters are so pure they appear blue.
- St. Arnaud Range – Drive to the top for a short walk to a lookout with 360-degree views of the park and the Wairau Valley.
- Trout Fishing – The lakes and rivers are renowned for brown and rainbow trout; a local guide can take you to the best spots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least three days to experience the highlights. Day one: explore Lake Rotoiti's easy walks and the St. Arnaud Range. Day two: tackle the Mount Robert Circuit or a section of the Travers-Sabine Circuit. Day three: venture to Lake Rotoroa for a quieter experience or book a boat trip to the head of the lake. If you're a keen tramper, five to seven days allows you to complete the full Travers-Sabine Circuit, one of New Zealand's Great Walks.
