Welcome to the Marlborough Sounds, a breathtaking network of sunken river valleys that carve into the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. This aquatic wonderland is a tapestry of deep blue water, lush green hills, and secluded coves, offering a serene escape from the beaten path. Whether you explore by boat, kayak, or on foot, the Sounds reward you with quiet beauty and a sense of discovery at every turn. The region is also the heart of New Zealand's world-class Sauvignon Blanc country, so expect excellent wine and fresh seafood to complement your adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Queen Charlotte Track – A 70km coastal walk with stunning views across the Sounds; do a multi-day hike or pick a day section from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge.
- Marlborough Wine Region – Stop in Blenheim or Renwick for cellar door tastings; Cloudy Bay and Brancott Estate are iconic.
- Kayaking in the Sounds – Paddle through calm waters past hidden bays and wildlife sanctuaries; guided trips from Picton or Havelock.
- Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary – Take a boat tour to see rare birds like the South Island saddleback and little blue penguins.
- Pelorus Sound – The larger, wilder sound with dramatic scenery and excellent fishing; cruise to the remote Pelorus Bridge.
- Picton Foreshore & Harbour – The gateway town with a lovely waterfront, the Edwin Fox Maritime Museum, and ferry connections.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least three full days to properly experience the Sounds. Use day one for a cruise or kayak trip into Queen Charlotte Sound, day two for a section of the Queen Charlotte Track, and day three to explore the wineries and Pelorus Sound. If you're short on time, a two-day whirlwind can cover a scenic boat tour and a winery visit, but you'll want to linger longer.
