Kaikōura’s mountain biking trails are a revelation—a mix of rugged coastal singletrack and forested climbs that serve up sweeping views of the Pacific and the Seaward Kaikōura Range. The region’s post-earthquake rebuild has created a world-class network of trails for all abilities, from flowy beginner loops to technical descents that’ll test your nerve. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or renting a bike for the first time, the combination of ocean air, native bush, and dramatic geology makes every pedal worthwhile.
Highlights & What to See
- Kaikōura Coast Track: A 20km point-to-point trail hugging the shoreline, with constant ocean views, seal colonies, and optional detours to secluded beaches. Best done as a shuttle ride from town.
- Mt Fyffe Forest: Steep, technical climbs rewarded by panoramic vistas of the peninsula and the Inland Kaikōura Range. The downhill sections are fast and loose—ideal for advanced riders.
- Kaikōura Mountain Bike Club Trails: A network of purpose-built tracks on the hills behind the town, including the popular 'Rusty's Run' and 'The Luge'—smooth berms, rollers, and jumps for all skill levels.
- Whale Watch Kaikōura Viewpoint: Accessible via a moderate ride up the peninsula, this spot offers a chance to spot sperm whales and dusky dolphins from your saddle (bring binoculars).
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway (bike-friendly sections): Combine a ride with a walk along the clifftops, passing fur seal colonies and limestone formations. Note: some sections are walking-only, so dismount and explore on foot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least two full days to do the region justice. Day one: tackle the Kaikōura Coast Track (half-day ride, plus time for seal spotting and lunch at a beachside café). Day two: head into the Mt Fyffe Forest for a morning of climbing and descending, then spend the afternoon on the club trails near town. If you’re short on time, a single day on the club trails or a shortened coast ride (starting from the southern end) still delivers a memorable taste.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Whale Watching Kaikōura: After a day on the trails, take a boat tour to see sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and albatross—it’s a completely different way to experience the marine environment.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: A gentle coastal walk that’s perfect for rest days or a sunset stroll; keep an eye out for seals and seabirds.
- Hundalee Hills: A short drive south, these hills offer quieter trails with views over the Conway River and the Pacific—great for a half-day ride.
- Hanmer Springs: About an hour’s drive inland, this alpine village has hot pools, river rafting, and its own network of mountain bike trails (the 'Hammer Trails') for a change of scenery.
