Mount Fyffe

Rising dramatically behind the Kaikōura Peninsula, Mount Fyffe is a classic South Island day-hike that rewards with panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean, the Kaikōura Ranges, and the patchwork farmland below. This is a steady, no-nonsense climb through beech forest and tussock slopes – bring sturdy boots, plenty of water, and a windproof jacket, because the summit can be blustery even on a calm day. The trail is well-maintained but steep in sections; take your time and you'll be rewarded with one of the best coastal-to-alpine vistas in the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers should allow 5–7 hours return for the 8.5 km (one-way) track with 1,300 m elevation gain. Start early to avoid afternoon wind and cloud. If you're a fit hiker, you can do it in under 5 hours, but plan for a full morning or afternoon. Not recommended for casual strollers – this is a proper workout.
