Ross Goldfields, set in the wild west coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a living museum of the country's gold rush era. The historic town of Ross, once a bustling gold-mining settlement, now offers visitors a chance to pan for gold, explore restored buildings, and walk trails through regenerating forest. The air is thick with history, and the surrounding rainforest and rugged coastline add a dramatic backdrop to this off-the-beaten-path destination.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is enough to explore Ross Goldfields thoroughly – spend an hour or two gold panning, walk the historic trail, and visit the museum. If you're keen on longer walks, allow a full day to also hike the nearby Hokitika Gorge or visit Lake Mahinapua. The best time to visit is during the drier summer months (December to February) when the tracks are most accessible.
