Thundering through a vast braided riverbed, the Rakaia River is one of New Zealand's great salmon-fishing rivers and a dramatic stop on the drive between Christchurch and the Canterbury high country. Its milky-blue waters, fed by Southern Alps glaciers, carve a wide, gravelly channel that shifts with each season, creating an ever-changing landscape that feels both raw and serene.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the Rakaia Gorge and taking a jet boat ride, but anglers should plan a full day or more. If you're passing through on State Highway 1, allow at least an hour to stretch your legs at the Rakaia River lookout – the scale of the braided riverbed is best appreciated from above. For a deeper experience, combine a morning on the river with an afternoon in nearby Methven or Ashburton.
