Thundering through a vast braided riverbed, the Rakaia River is one of New Zealand's great salmon-fishing rivers and a dramatic stop on the drive between Christchurch and the Canterbury high country. Its milky-blue waters, fed by Southern Alps glaciers, carve a wide, gravelly channel that shifts with each season, creating an ever-changing landscape that feels both raw and serene.
Highlights & What to See
- Rakaia Gorge – Hike or bike the Rakaia Gorge Walkway for panoramic views of the river twisting through steep cliffs; the turquoise water against ochre rock is a photographer's dream.
- Salmon Fishing – The Rakaia is world-famous for its Chinook salmon runs (October–April). Join a guided trip or try your luck from the riverbank; locals swear by the stretch near the Rakaia River mouth.
- Jet Boat Adventures – Feel the adrenaline as a jet boat skims across the braided channels, spinning through shallow rapids with the Southern Alps as a backdrop.
- Rakaia River Mouth – A wild, windswept coastline where the river meets the Pacific. Spot seabirds and seals, or simply enjoy the solitude of this dramatic meeting point.
- Birds and Wildlife – The braided riverbeds are home to endangered wrybill and black-fronted terns; bring binoculars and tread lightly on nesting sites.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the Rakaia Gorge and taking a jet boat ride, but anglers should plan a full day or more. If you're passing through on State Highway 1, allow at least an hour to stretch your legs at the Rakaia River lookout – the scale of the braided riverbed is best appreciated from above. For a deeper experience, combine a morning on the river with an afternoon in nearby Methven or Ashburton.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Methven – A lively ski town in winter, with great pubs and access to Mount Hutt; in summer, it's a base for mountain biking and hiking.
- Ashburton – A classic Canterbury farming town with a good Sunday market and the Ashburton River walkway.
- Christchurch – The gateway city, just an hour's drive north, offers rebuilt cultural precincts, botanic gardens, and the Antarctic attraction.
- Rakaia Gorge Walkway – A must-do short walk (1–2 hours) that delivers the best views of the gorge.
- Lake Coleridge – A scenic detour into the high country, with a hydro lake and tussock-covered hills perfect for a picnic.
