Otematata, a tiny settlement on the shores of Lake Aviemore in the Waitaki Valley, is a serene base for exploring the hydro-lakes and limestone landscapes of North Otago. Originally a construction town for the Aviemore Dam, it now offers an off-the-beaten-path retreat with excellent fishing, kayaking, and stargazing.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Otematata is a one- or two-night stopover on a South Island road trip. Spend a full day cycling or fishing on the lake, then enjoy a quiet evening under the stars. It works well as a relaxing break between Christchurch (3 hours) and Queenstown (3.5 hours) or Tekapo (1.5 hours).
