Just outside Blenheim, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is a world-class museum that brings the golden age of aviation to life. Housed in a hangar-like building, its collection of pristine vintage aircraft and wartime memorabilia is presented with dramatic dioramas that transport you straight into the cockpits and trenches of World War I and II. The centre is a must for history buffs and anyone fascinated by the romance of early flight.
Highlights & What to See
- Sir Peter Jackson's Collection: The film director's private collection of WWI aircraft forms the core of the exhibition, with planes built from original plans and restored to flying condition.
- Dioramas: Each aircraft is set in a meticulously detailed scene — a French farmhouse, a German airfield, a crashed Zeppelin — complete with mannequins, mud, and smoke effects.
- WWII Hall: A separate wing showcases fighters and bombers from the Second World War, including a Spitfire and a rare Japanese Zero.
- Flight Simulators: Try your hand at flying a vintage biplane or dogfighting in a modern jet — a hit for kids and adults alike.
- Guided Tours: Knowledgeable guides share incredible stories of the pilots and aircraft, adding depth to the exhibits.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2–3 hours to fully appreciate the exhibits. If you're an aviation enthusiast, you could easily spend half a day here. The centre is open daily, and the best time to visit is in the morning when it's quieter. Combine it with a wine tour in Marlborough for a perfect day out.
