This is a place where the air smells of pine and wild thyme, and the only soundtrack is the wind rustling through tussock. Whether you're lacing up for a day hike, saddling up on a mountain bike, or simply soaking in the panorama from a lookout, Mt Malahon delivers that quintessential South Island high-country experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors dedicate a full day to exploring Mt Malahon. For the main summit hike, start early (allow 6–8 hours round trip) and pack plenty of water and layers. If you're mountain biking, you can easily spend half a day on the trails and still have time to soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools afterward. For a quick taste, the Conical Hill lookout walk takes just 45 minutes and is a great option if you're passing through.
