Mt Isobel Tramping

Rising dramatically above the thermal village of Hanmer Springs, Mt Isobel offers one of the South Island’s most rewarding day hikes. The well-maintained track rewards you with sweeping views of the Hammer Basin, the Seaward Kaikōura Range, and on a clear day, the Pacific Ocean. This is a classic New Zealand alpine tramp accessible to reasonably fit walkers, with a sense of wilderness that belies its proximity to the village.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day (6–8 hours return) for the round trip from the village. Start early to avoid afternoon heat in summer or afternoon winds in spring. The track is well graded but steep in places; pace yourself and carry plenty of water. Many walkers combine the tramp with a relaxing soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools afterwards – a perfect way to soothe tired muscles.
