The Mount Mary Queen Track is a rewarding day hike in the Hanmer Springs area, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This moderately challenging trail climbs steadily through beech forest and open tussock, culminating in a panoramic summit that makes every step worthwhile. It's a favourite among locals for its sense of solitude and connection to the alpine landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: From the top, gaze across the Hanmer Basin to the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the distant Pacific Ocean on clear days.
- Beech Forest: The lower section winds through ancient red and silver beech trees, with birdlife including tomtits and bellbirds.
- Alpine Flora: In spring and summer, look for mountain daisies, hebes, and other hardy plants clinging to the rocky slopes.
- Photography Opportunities: The changing light across the valleys makes for stunning photos, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Far less crowded than some other tracks, it offers a true backcountry experience close to town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 4–5 hours for the return journey, including time to soak in the summit views. Start early to avoid the heat in summer and to catch the best light. The track is steep in sections, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy the lower forest section in a couple of hours.
