Perched above the thermal haven of Hanmer Springs, Mount Heritage Park is a sprawling alpine playground where walking trails, mountain-bike tracks, and historic goldmining relics converge beneath the Southern Alps. This is New Zealand at its rawest: the air smells of pine and wild thyme, and the views stretch from the Hanmer Basin to the snow-dusted peaks of the Amuri Range. Whether you’re pedaling the legendary Waiau River track or strolling through beech forest to an old miner’s hut, the park delivers a rugged, authentic slice of backcountry South Island.
Highlights & What to See
- Conical Hill Walk – A steep but rewarding 2.5 km loop through red beech and manuka, culminating in panoramic views over the Hanmer Basin and the Seaward Kaikōura Range. Go at sunset for golden light.
- Dog Stream Track – A gentle, family-friendly trail that follows a clear stream past historic gold workings. Keep an eye out for fantails and bellbirds flitting among the ferns.
- Goldmine Track – Follow the route of 1860s prospectors to the remains of old sluicing operations. Interpretive signs tell the story of the region’s short-lived gold rush.
- Mountain Biking on the Waiau River Track – One of New Zealand’s great off-road rides, this 28 km grade 2-3 trail winds along the braided Waiau River, crossing swingbridges and passing through forest and farmland. Rent a bike in Hanmer Springs.
- Jollies Pass Road – A scenic drive (or cycle) over the pass to the Molesworth Station boundary, with vast tussock landscapes and, in summer, wildflowers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day exploring the park – enough for one or two short walks or a mountain-bike ride on the Waiau River Track. If you want to tackle the full Waiau River ride (allow 3–4 hours) or combine several trails, plan a full day. The park is open year-round, but winter snow can close higher tracks, so check conditions. Pair your visit with an afternoon soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools – the perfect antidote to tired legs.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kaikōura – A 90-minute drive east, this coastal town is famous for whale watching, seal colonies, and the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.
- Molesworth Station – New Zealand’s largest farm, accessible via a rugged 4WD road from Jollies Pass (open summer only). A true backcountry adventure.
- Lewis Pass National Reserve – A 30-minute drive north, with the Maruia Falls and hot springs, plus the St James Walkway for multi-day tramping.
