Mount Herbert
Looming above the thermal haven of Hanmer Springs, Mount Herbert is a rugged, rewarding day-hike that delivers big alpine views without requiring technical climbing skills. The track climbs through golden tussock and beech forest, opening onto a summit panorama that sweeps from the Seaward Kaikōura Range to the Pacific Ocean. It’s a classic Canterbury backcountry experience, best tackled in clear weather when the light plays across the layered peaks.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: From the top, you’ll see the Kaikōura Ranges, the Canterbury Plains, and on a clear day, the distant Southern Alps. The 360-degree perspective is the main reward.
- Mount Isobel: Often combined with Mount Herbert on a longer loop; a separate peak with its own excellent views and a slightly different character.
- Hanmer Forest Park: The lower slopes are part of this forest park, with lovely beech groves and chances to spot native birds like robins and fantails.
- St James Walkway: The track up Mount Herbert connects to this famous multi-day route, so you can sample a section if you’re after a longer outing.
- Conical Hill: A shorter, easier summit option near Hanmer Springs township, good for a quick leg-stretcher with views over the village.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the return hike to Mount Herbert from Hanmer Springs — typically 6–8 hours depending on your pace. It’s a strenuous climb with steady elevation gain, so start early to avoid afternoon heat and clouds. If you’re short on time, you can drive partway up Jollies Pass Road to shorten the walk, but the full hike from the trailhead is the most satisfying. Combine it with a soak at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools in the evening for the perfect end to an active day.
