Rising steeply from the Hanmer Basin, Mount Arthur is a classic half-day tramp that rewards you with sweeping views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the patchwork farmland of North Canterbury. The well-graded track climbs through beech forest and manuka scrub before breaking out onto the rocky summit ridge — a perfect spot for a picnic and a photo of the distant Pacific Ocean.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 3–4 hours return for the 8 km round trip, plus time to linger at the top. Start early in summer to beat the heat and the afternoon nor’wester. The track is doable as a morning outing from Hanmer Springs, leaving the afternoon free for hot pools or a winery visit.
