Rising dramatically above the Hanmer Springs basin, Mount Aria offers one of the most rewarding half-day hikes in the region. This 1,590-metre peak rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the checkerboard farmlands of the Amuri Plain, and on clear days, the glint of the Pacific Ocean. The well-marked track starts from the Hanmer Springs township and climbs steadily through mountain beech forest before breaking out into tussock and rock. It's a proper workout, but the sense of achievement — and the picnic spot at the top — makes every step worth it.
Highlights & What to See
- The summit panorama — 360-degree views that take in the Hanmer Basin, the Kaikōura Ranges, and the Canterbury Plains all the way to the coast.
- Conical Hill — a shorter side-trip on the way up that offers a sneak preview of the views and is perfect for a breather.
- Alpine flora and birdlife — listen for the bell-like call of the korimako (bellbird) and look for mountain daisies and hebes along the trail.
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa — the perfect reward after the descent; soak tired muscles in naturally heated mineral water.
- Woodland Walk — a gentle loop through towering redwoods and exotic trees near the village, great for a cool-down stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 3–4 hours return for the Mount Aria track, including time at the top to soak in the views. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to catch the best light for photography. If you're combining it with a soak at the thermal pools, set aside a full day to do both without rushing.
