Mount Amily

Rising gracefully above the Hanmer Basin, Mount Amily offers one of the most rewarding day walks in the region. This 1,390-metre peak is a classic climb through beech forest and alpine scrub, culminating in panoramic views that sweep across the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Pacific Ocean, and the patchwork plains of North Canterbury. The trail is well-marked but steep in sections, rewarding those who make the effort with a true sense of alpine escape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full morning or afternoon – the return hike takes around 4–5 hours at a steady pace. Most people start from the Jacks Pass car park, following the Mount Amily Track which climbs steadily for 5 km. Pack layers, plenty of water, and a windproof jacket, as the summit can be exposed even on fine days. If you're short on time, you can turn back at the bushline viewpoint (about 1.5 hours up) for a shorter but still scenic outing.
