Makarora is a tiny settlement at the northern end of Lake Wanaka, where the Makarora River flows into the lake. It's a gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and a perfect stop for those seeking solitude, spectacular scenery, and a taste of New Zealand's wild South Island. The area is rich in history, with remnants of gold-mining days and a strong conservation ethos. Here, you'll find pristine beech forests, alpine meadows, and the chance to spot native birds like kea and kākā.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend just a few hours stopping at Makarora en route between Wanaka and Haast. However, to fully appreciate the walks and river activities, plan for a half-day (3–5 hours). If you're keen on fishing or longer hikes in Mount Aspiring National Park, consider an overnight stay at one of the local lodges or campsites.
