Lees Valley is a hidden gem in the Canterbury high country, a broad, pastoral valley cradled by the Puketeraki Range and the Torlesse Range. It’s a place of big skies, tussock-covered hills, and a profound sense of remoteness – yet it’s only a 40-minute drive from Hanmer Springs. The gravel road in (part of the Inland Scenic Route) is an adventure in itself, winding through the spectacular Waiau Gorge. Here, you’ll find working sheep stations, historic huts, and some of the best wild camping and hiking in North Canterbury. It’s a destination for those who want to escape the crowds and connect with New Zealand’s backcountry soul.
Highlights & What to See
- Waiau Gorge Drive: The approach from Hanmer Springs is a scenic highlight, with dramatic limestone bluffs and the turquoise Waiau River far below.
- Lees Valley Walkway: A 2–3 hour return tramp along the valley floor, following an old pack track with views of the surrounding ranges and the chance to spot native birdlife like the New Zealand falcon.
- St James Conservation Area: The valley is the southern gateway to this vast, remote wilderness area – perfect for multi-day tramping, hunting, or simply exploring the network of 4WD tracks.
- Historic Station Huts: Several restored musterers’ huts dot the valley, offering a glimpse into the area’s farming history and basic shelter for trampers.
- Dark Sky Stargazing: With virtually no light pollution, Lees Valley is an outstanding spot for astrophotography and soaking up the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lees Valley can be visited as a half-day drive from Hanmer Springs (allow 2–3 hours for the loop including short walks and photo stops). For a deeper experience, plan a full day to hike the Lees Valley Walkway and explore the St James Conservation Area. Overnight camping is popular, especially in the backcountry huts or at the designated freedom camping sites – bring all supplies, as there are no shops or services in the valley.
