Lake Sumner, cradled in the remote Lewis Pass National Reserve, is a shimmering gem of alpine beauty that rewards those who venture off the beaten track. This turquoise lake, surrounded by beech forests and towering peaks, offers a true wilderness escape in the Canterbury region. The journey here is an adventure in itself, with gravel roads winding through stunning landscapes, making it a perfect detour for self-drive travellers seeking solitude and raw nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Sumner is best enjoyed over two days if you plan to tackle the full track or kayak. For a day trip from Hanmer Springs, allow at least 4–5 hours for the drive and a short walk to the lake shore. The gravel road (Lake Sumner Road) requires careful driving, especially after rain, so factor in extra time. Overnight stays are possible at the Lake Sumner Hut (book via DOC) for a true backcountry experience.
