Kawarau Bungy is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, a heart-pounding leap from the historic Kawarau Bridge suspended 43 metres above the turquoise Kawarau River. Since AJ Hackett opened the site in 1988, it has become a bucket-list icon for adrenaline seekers visiting New Zealand. The experience is as much about the stunning setting—a narrow gorge flanked by schist rock walls and vineyards—as it is about the freefall. Even if you don't jump, the viewing platform offers a front-row seat to the action, and the on-site café serves excellent coffee to steady your nerves.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full experience, including check-in, safety briefing, the jump itself, and time to watch others. If you're just spectating, 30–45 minutes is enough. The site is open daily, and booking ahead is recommended during peak summer months (December–February).
