Kaikoura is a world-renowned marine mammal hotspot, where the deep Hikurangi Trench meets the coast, creating an upwelling of nutrients that attracts an extraordinary array of marine life. Here, you can witness giant sperm whales, dusky dolphins, fur seals, and migrating humpback whales, all set against a dramatic backdrop of the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range. The experience is both humbling and exhilarating, offering a rare chance to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least a full day in Kaikoura to allow for a whale-watching tour (typically 2-3 hours) and time to explore the peninsula. If you can, stay overnight – the town has a laid-back vibe, excellent seafood (try the crayfish), and the evening light on the mountains is magical. Two days would let you also do a dolphin swim or an albatross tour without feeling rushed.
