Just a short drive north of Kaikoura township, the Kaikoura Seal Colony is one of New Zealand's most accessible and rewarding wildlife encounters. Here, a large colony of New Zealand fur seals (kekeno) lolls on rocky outcrops and beaches, often just metres from the walking track. The air is filled with their barks and the salty tang of the sea, while the dramatic backdrop of the Kaikoura Ranges and Pacific Ocean makes for unforgettable scenery. It's a raw, wild experience that epitomises the South Island's coastal grandeur.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least half a day to the seal colony and the peninsula walkway. If you want to add a whale watching or dolphin tour, plan a full day in Kaikoura. The colony can be visited in as little as 30 minutes if you're on a tight schedule, but the walkway rewards those who linger.
