The Kaikōura Coast is a breathtaking stretch of New Zealand's South Island where the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges dramatically into the Pacific Ocean. This is a place of epic landscapes, abundant marine life, and a deep sense of connection to the natural world. The coastal highway (SH1) offers jaw-dropping views around every corner, but the real magic lies in exploring the shores and waters that teem with sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least a full day to the Kaikōura Coast. If you're driving between Christchurch and the Marlborough Sounds, an overnight stay is ideal: arrive early for a morning whale-watching tour, then explore the peninsula walk and grab a crayfish lunch. For a more relaxed pace, two days allow you to also kayak with dolphins or take a scenic flight over the mountains and whales.
