Rising above the alpine village of Hanmer Springs, the Conical Hill Track is a short but rewarding climb that delivers panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and the Hanmer Basin. This well-maintained walking track weaves through regenerating native forest, with interpretive signs along the way that tell the story of the area's geology and history. It's a perfect leg-stretcher after a soak in the hot pools or a scenic break on a longer road trip through North Canterbury.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–1.5 hours for the return walk (2.5 km loop). It's a steady uphill climb but suitable for most fitness levels; take your time and enjoy the benches and lookout points en route. Combine with a morning at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools or an afternoon on the nearby Dog Stream walking tracks for a full day outdoors.
