Bannockburn is a tiny, sun-baked settlement on the shores of Lake Dunstan in Central Otago, New Zealand. Once a bustling gold-mining town, today it's a peaceful haven known for its historic stone buildings, world-class pinot noir, and stunning landscapes of schist rock and dry tussock. The drive from Cromwell takes you through dramatic gorges and past orchards, ending in a place that feels like a step back in time.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Bannockburn can be enjoyed as a half-day detour from Cromwell or Queenstown, but to truly soak up the wine and history, plan for a full day. Combine a morning walk at the Sluicings with an afternoon of wine tasting, finishing with a late lunch at the hotel. If cycling the Lake Dunstan Trail, allow 3–4 hours for a one-way ride from Cromwell to Bannockburn.
